World’s Fastest Supercomputer
On Monday, Japan’s Fugaku supercomputer took the top spot, performing 2.8 times more calculations per second than an IBM machine in the US. The US machine, named Summit, came to the top of the previous four-time bi-annual Top500 list. Fugaku ‘s victory broke a long stretch of US-China domination, bringing Japan back to the top for the first time in 11 years.
The Japanese supercomputer is already being used for Covid-19 research on an experimental basis, including treatment, diagnosis, and virus spread simulations, Riken said in an April statement. Fugaku — another name for Mount Fuji will operate at full capacity next year.
Its performance was measured at 415.53 petaflops, 2.8 times faster than second-place Summit’s 148.6 petaflops. The US machine is housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. A supercomputer is classified by being more than 1,000 times faster than a regular computer.
The Japanese supercomputer, powered by SoftBank-owned (SFTBY SOFTBANK) arm chips, knocked Summit into second place. Sierra, another US-built system, took third place, and two china’s state research organizations developed supercomputers, Sunway TaihuLight and Tianhe-2A, rounded out the top five.
